How to play 2048

Read the aim of 2048, then make your first move. Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Move the board using an arrow key, swipe, or a direction button.
  2. Equal adjacent tiles combine once per move; their new value is added to your score.
  3. Keep an empty lane where possible. Undo reverses the most recent move.
  4. Use New round to begin with two tiles.

Controls

Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

A useful example

A row containing 4, 0, 4, 0 can slide left and join into an 8. The empty cells between equal values do not block the merge. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

A swipe that leaves the board unchanged does not add a new tile. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
