How to play Peg Solitaire

Make Peg Solitaire your next activity in the game library. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Look at what changes after your first action.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. A different version of the game may use a different rule. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
